Aunque este blog está dedicado de forma principal a la Fotografía y la presentación de imágenes en Heliograbado, se inicia aquí una nueva sección de entradas dedicadas a la Tipografía. ¿Por qué Tipografía? Una primera razón es que la Tipografía forma parte de lo que podría denominarse la Sagrada Trilogía compuesta por Tinta, Papel y Presión a la que también pertenece el Heliograbado.
La segunda razón, más pragmática, no se trata tanto de acometer una nueva técnica de impresión sin más, sino la de poder incorporar algunos textos a los heliograbados. En este caso y al igual que se hace con el heliograbado, el estudio de esta posibilidad se afronta con el mismo espíritu, es decir, en base a la utilización de aquellos materiales y métodos que no necesariamente estén asociados a una época determinada de la Historia de la Impresión, sino que permitan un procedimiento híbrido. Ello ha de permitir alcanzar un equilibrio entre la imperfección del trabajo manual y las aportaciones tecnológicas que contribuyan a un mejor resultado.
Con el fin de realizar un trabajo de impresión manual, se utilizará una prensa de pruebas de época. Se trata de un modelo sin marca conocida, probablemente una copia de las llamadas Galley Proof Press o Cylinder Proof Press de finales del Siglo XIX o inicios del Siglo XX (Fig., 1).
Although this blog is mainly devoted to the Photography and Heliogravure printmaking, it begins here a new series of posts dedicated to Letterpress. Why Letterpress? A first reason is because Letterpress belongs what can be named as the Sacred Trilogy composed by Ink, Paper and Pressure, to which appertains also Heliogravure.
The second motivation, more pragmatics, it is not the simple incursion in a new printmaking technique, but to be able to include some text in the heliogravure prints. In this case, as is done in heliogravure, the study of this possibility it is made with the same working spirit, that is to say, based on the use of those materials and methods not necessarily related with a given period of Printmaking History, but allowing for a hybrid process. This would drive to achieve a balance between the roughness of hand made and those technological contributions allowing a best result.
In order to print by hand, the press used will be a unit with no brand, probably one of the numerous copies of the so called Galley Proof Press or Cylinder Proof Press very common at the last years of the XIX Century and early years of the XX Century (Fig., 1).
La prensa, convenientemente restaurada, permite la regulación en altura de las guias laterales del rodillo o cilindro. Esta regulación proporciona un ajuste de la altura del cilindro a los grosores de los tipos y/o su soporte y facilita el uso de papeles de impresión de diferente gramaje. Para una forma dada, la presión de trabajo depende del peso del cilindro, del ajuste en altura de las guías laterales y de la interposición de materiales más o menos gruesos y flexibles entre el cilindro y el papel de impresión. Ante la ausencia del tímpano original, se ha provisto al cilindro de un recubrimiento de lámina de látex que permite a su vez la interposición de hojas de papel a modo de ajuste fino de la presión ( no se muestra en la imagen). Los tipos utilizados y los métodos para su elaboración se describirán en sucesivas entradas de esta sección.
The press, conveniently restored, allows for the adjustment in height of the cylinder guides. This regulation provides a fit of cylinder height to the thickness of the types and/or its support and facilitates also the use of papers of different grammage. For a given printing form, the working pressure depends on the weight of the cylinder, the adjustment in heigh of the cylinder guides and the use of more or less thick and elastic materials between the cylinder and the printing paper. Because of the absence of the original tympan, the cylinder has been coated with a latex leaf allowing in turn the use of interspersed sheets of paper in order to fine tune the pressure (not shown in the picture). The types used and the methods to obtain it will be described in successive posts of this blog section.
